Farscape absolutely rules

Yes, it does. I was home yesterday and they ran the last eight episodes on SciFi. I watched every last one of them. :-o

I started watching Farscape last summer because there is absolute crap on daytime TV, and I figured that SciFi would at least have something somewhat original on it. Most of the shows were crap, but one show caught my attention, and that show is Farscape.

This is without comparison my favorite show right now. I never thought anything would come close to my love of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but Farscape has passed it right on by. Part of this explanation comes from my love of science fiction and fantasy, but Farscape (and Buffy, for that matter) is an extremely well done show.

The basic premise of the show is unique. An American astronaut is shot through a wormhole and ends up on the other side of the galaxy in the middle of a big battle. He ends up on a ship…..”a living ship” populated by escaped prisoners. This living ship is flown by a “pilot” who is literally grown into the ship and lives symbiotically with the ship…they are one. The prisoners are all different species of aliens, and they all band together to fight evil, and sometimes themselves in the process.

The writing is fantastic. Witty. Intelligent and touching. Once you get to know the characters, it is hilarious at times, and heartbreaking in others. Crichton makes constant references to American culture that the aliens just don’t get. But we do. :-)

The characters are fantastic. All are well developed and interesting and complex. Most are not entirely good all the time. In other words, they are very human in that respect, each having definite character flaws, as well as tremendous strengths. Sometimes they piss me off….sometimes they make me laugh….and occasionally they bring a tear or two to my eye.

The acting is very good. Ben Browder as Crichton is fantastic as is Claudia Black as Aeryn Sun. I think my favorite, though, is Pa’u Zotoh Zhaan, played by Virginia Hey. She is a Delvian priestess searching “for perfect understanding and unity with all life.” Very spiritual and, yet, very human in her weaknesses and foibles. Plus, she could really be a badass when needed. Oh, and she had a very nice blue ass. ;-)

The show is done by the Henson company, so there are a few of the puppet characters they are famous for and the special effects are good. They don’t overpower the show, only add to it.

Anyway, if you’ve read this far, I highly recommend this show. SciFi still runs it at different times during the day and night. Netflix has all the episodes on hand, or you could just go out and by the DVDs. :-D

And make sure to watchi the miniseries this October 17th. Sunday. Mark it on your calendars!!!
