Christmas is nigh
He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree. ~Roy L. Smith
I guess I’ve developed a different type of Christmas belief over the years, owing much to Joseph Campbell. I do believe that Jesus was born about two thousand years ago. Whether he was born of a virgin, in real life, is not that important to me. For me, viewing the story as a myth the way that Campbell teaches is important in that it allows me to internalize the Christmas story.
Viewing the story internally, God remains God. But the virgin Mary is my soul…the virgin soul. Innocence and potentiality as yet unrealized. When God is brought to this virgin soul, the virgin is impregnated and the Christ child is created. This is not something that happens in the past…it must happen today. So today, I’m doing my part to make my soul fertile and receptive to God, and also to love and nurture the Child that is growing inside me.
“What difference does it make that Christ was born 2000 years ago, if I don’t give birth to Him today, here and now?” - paraphrase of Meister Eckhart
indeed. “for what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul.” Campbell has a wonderful way of reminding us that it is our soul’s journey, afterall.
Merry and Blessed Christmas to you and Daisyhead!
