Oh, yeah. Cowboy Junkies are playing in Des Moines on July 16.

I am really out of the loop, because I didn’t know they had released a new album two days ago. Normally, I would have known about such things and would have ordered it already. What the hell???

Oh, well……I’m very excited, especially after seeing Ms. McLachlan last month. This is good news. Great music is great for the soul and that’s what I need right now.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Junkies, they are my favorite musical artists and have been for a few years now. The core of the band is siblings Michael, Peter and Margo Timmins and longtime friend Alan Anton. Mike plays guitar, writes the most fantastic songs and produces their music. Margo sings and sings very beautifully and powerfully. Pete plays drums and Alan plays bass. The band plays music that is distinctly their own. Once you’ve really heard them, you will never confuse them with anyone else in the world. They play music that pulls from various styles including blues, psychedelic, country, rock and folk. They’ve done covers of other artists such as Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Patsy Cline and Hank Williams Sr. But they really shine when they sing Mike’s original compositions.

If you ever get the chance to see them live, please do yourself a favor and go.
